History
Established in 1981, the United Airlines Mileage Plus program was developed as a way for United Airlines to reward faithful customers. After the 1978 Airline Deregulation Act eliminated government control of the commerical airline industry and subjected the industry to market forces, the subsequent heightened competition motivated airline marketing departments to create new ways to build loyal customer bases. Now entering its 27th year, United Airlines Mileage Plus has consistently been voted the best frequent flyer program by readers of Business Traveler
